#1 Pilot: Aired Tuesday, September 22, 1998

The Hughleys are getting settled into their beautiful new home in the Los Angeles suburbs, but Darryl keeps seeing racism where there is none and lets his friend Milsap scare him into thinking that he's on the "slippery slope" to losing his blackness. The last straw is when his daughter pics out a white doll over a black doll in a toy store, and Darryl strikes out at his friendly white neighbors much to Yvonne's dismay.

Darryl can't handle driving the school carpool for Yvonne for a couple of days. Darryl reluctantly joins Dave's Tuesday pool game, and is surprised when he has a good time.

Darryl feels left out when Milsap hits it off with Dave and Yvonne becomes busy with Sally's baby showers.

Dave's not around when Sally goes into labor, so the Hughleys and Milsap come to her rescue. Darryl overhears a conversation between Yvonne and a nurse and thinks that Yvonne might be pregnant. He goes through first fear and then excitement until he realizes that he has completely misunderstood what he overheard.

Darryl is not psyched when Yvonne signs him up to coach Michael's suburban soccer team. However, despite his aversion, his unusual approach to the game gives the team their first win and makes his son a hero.

Yvonne takes a week-long full-time job doing fund raising at a local hospital, and Darryl does a terrible job of taking care of the house and the kids in her absence. When she's offered permanent full-time position, both Yvonne and Darryl have to reconsider how they live their lives. Dave is threatened when he finds out that Sally made more money in 1998 than he did.

Darryl gets upset when Sydney's first crush is on a white boy, but when he hears the boy's father say all the same things he was thinking, he realizes that it's a bad attitude.

Milsap accepts another job when Darryl refuses to give him what he deserves. The family practices home evacuation drills as fires draw closer.
